Cyndi Lauper talked about youth homelessness particularly among the LGBT youth in an address that she delivered before a Senate subcommittee in Capitol Hill last April 29.
Homelessness was also one of the problems that the 80's pop star faced in her youth, thus leading to the development of the "True Colors" fund to address a solution to this issues, according to New York Times.

Lauper ran away from home at an early age of 17, after receiving threats from her stepfather who was planning to rape her and her sister. Lauper discussed her previous experience as a drive to address New York City's LGBT Youth, according to ABC News.
Though Lauper already left the witness table after making her statement, she had more questions that needed to be answered.
"The problem is worsened by the fact that shelters sometimes turn youth away, particularly the transgender," said Lauper during a discussion with Senator Susan Collins during the First Draft.
Collins and Lauper pointed out that approximately 40 percent of the homeless children consist of LGBT youth and solutions must be proposed to alleviate this rising problem.
Collin proposed a solution that shelters provided by federal aid must comply to a non-discrimination policy. This is also a provision to the bill to renew the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act, which expired last 2013.
The filing for its renewal fell 60 votes short as a passage for the amendment of the human trafficking bill.
The challenges Collins and Lauper faced was the confusion in various parts of the amendment particularly the measure that was misinterpreted as an inhibition of religious based organizations unable to hire workers of the same religion.
Collins, in response, explained that the Justice Department already took care of that problem. She also hopes to clarify that should the measures be reviewed again, it will be at a manner when it was originally introduced.
"Listening to these stories, it changed me. Maybe there's something I can do beside from just a famous person and singing to them," said Lauper.
