The anti-trust lawsuit, filed in May 5 with the California Central District Court, against Alan Haymon and company, seeks up to $300 million in damages and penalties.
De La Hoya claims that Haymon is pretending not to be a boxing promoter and in the process "has acted to cut off legitimate promoters not only from promoting boxers he manages, but also from essential network television of boxing matches," the news outlet reported citing the filing.
Bad Left Hook noted that under the Muhammad Ali Boxing Redorm Act, individuals cannot act as both a fighter's manager and promoter - something that Haymon is accused of violating.
Bad Left Hook added that Haymon is believed to act as an adviser or manager to over 150 boxers, to date. It is said De La Hoya is criticizing Haymon for the repeated violation of the Ali Act, which aimed "to help fighters avoid the fate that bedeviled so many of our predecessors."
De La Hoya's lawsuit comes days after the conclusion of the so-called Fight of the Century between Mayweather and Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao.
"Having personally been refused a lucrative fight with a Haymon-managed fighter, I have felt first-hand the impact of Haymon's attempt to form a monopoly. These practices are detrimental to boxers, fans and the sport as a whole," Bernard Hopkins, an American boxer and De La Hoya's managing partner for Golden Boy, quoted saying.
Bloomberg notes that defendants of the suit have not returned phone calls and messages seeking comment about the case, just yet.
The case is titled "Golden Boy Promotions LLC et al v. Haymon et al."
