In the last week of April, the Chinese government concluded the second reading of the draft of its national security law. The proposed draft was reviewed by the standing committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) which takes care of the legislative assembly. The core purpose of introducing the new cybersecurity laws is to strengthen the internet management system and also punish the cyberattacks in the country to send out a strong signal to those forcing their way into the confidential data with wrong intentions.
Recently, when the infamous Edward Snowden controversy made headlines, the disclosure revealed that American spy agencies were hacking into the internet management systems of other countries, simply to keep track of the events happening in their region. In other words, Snowden said that America was actually eavesdropping over its neighbors.
China, being a fast growing economy that has shown great potential, realized that it could be an obvious target and therefore the need to reframe the laws became prominent. The new draft was made soon after and has so far undergone two readings. Soon, the new laws will be finalized.
The previous cybersecurity laws were framed with a vision of supporting the counter-terrorism laws. This time too, the looming threat of increasing cases of terrorism has been taking into consideration, prior to framing the laws. The reports were also confirmed through news released on Businessinsider.
