Anthony Geary Of 'General Hospital' Calls It Quits After 28 Years

After 28 years on the ABC daytime soap "General Hospital," Anthony Geary finally called it quits.

The 67-year-old actor, who plays Luke Spencer on the long-standing show, dropped the news on an interview with "TV Insider" last May 8. In the aired interview, Anthony Geary expressed his desire for more time to explore another part of his life.

"This show has been a huge part of my life for over half my life and Luke Spencer is my alter ego," Anthony Geary said. "But I'm just weary of the grind and have been for 20 years."

Anthony Geary also added that his time is not infinite and he refuses to literally die on the "General Hospital" set.

It was actually last January when Anthony Geary made the decision to say goodbye to Genera Hospital and Luke Spencer once his contract is up. He will shoot his last episodes through late June, which will be aired through late July of this year.

Anthony Geary admitted that he has no idea how Luke will be written off the show, but he revealed that there will definitely be "twists and turns" in the General Hospital drama.

Executive producer Frank Valentini of General Hospital expressed his reaction to the Anthony Geary's decision to leave the show: "Anthony is our friend and a part of our television family, but, as difficult as this may be, we understand and respect that this is his choice."

Anthony Geary has a total of 800 episodes with General Hospital, which allowed him to bag eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his character Luke, a hit man turned rapist, who eventually married his victim, Laura Webber, played by Genie Francis.

He debuted on General Hospital in 1978 and left in 1984 but returned in 1991 as Luke's look-alike cousin Bill Eckhert, because he wanted to explore a different role. However, due to the disappointment of the fans, his Eckhert character was killed off and Anthony Geary resumed the role of Luke in 1993.
