Famous rapper Kanye West has just received an honorary doctorate degree from the Art Institute Of Chicago on Monday.

During the commencement exercise, the graduates raptly listened to the rapper deliver his speech that rambled from being nervous to praising George W. Bush for what he calls self-portraiture. Kanye West's proud wife Kim Kardashian, who is currently in Brazil promoting her book, "Selfish," congratulated him for his doctorate degree via Twitter.

Kanye West grew up in a middle class family in Chicago. His divorced mother, Dr. Donda West (a Professor of English at Clark Atlanta University) raised him and saw to it he studied well. At an early age, West showed a talent for writing.

That and his musical interest flourished when hip-hop and rap became popular. His ambition then was to become a rap artist.

However, Kanye West merely became a producer for other rap artists at the Rock-a-fella Records. He became a well-known rap producer but his ambition to be a rap artist continued.

Soon, Kanye West's involvement in the music industry made him decide to drop out of college at age 20. His mother, looking after his welfare, retired as chair of the English Department of the Chicago State University to support him in his endeavour.

Kanye West did all he can to make his first rap album, however, in October 2002, while driving home he fell asleep at the wheel and met an accident. Because of this, his jaw had to be wired. But this episode did not dampen the rapper's spirit.

In 2004, Kanye West's dream album was released titled "College Dropout." Soon, success after success followed him. The album was voted by two major music publication as the top album of the year

Who could forget his debut single "Through The Wire" followed by the second single "Slow Jamz" featuring Twista and Jamie Foxx? The fourth single "Jesus Walks" all the more exposed West to a wider audience.

Kanye West's "College Dropout' album was a certified triple platinum in the U.S. that garnered West 10 Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Album and Album of the year.
