In 2010, Zeitner met her gynecologist and told the doctor that she was suffering from Sarcoma, Stage IV. She also said that she was undergoing treatment for the same in Boston and was due for surgery to remove her cancerous tumors in her spine and abdomen area. Her pregnancy further endangered her life, so doctors suggested that she abort the baby, as per reports by ABC News.
As Zeitner was a part of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, so her late-term abortion was paid by the state. It is worthy to mention that the state health care department only pays for abortions in case the mother-to-be's life is in danger. Since Zeitner had presented documents to prove that she was suffering from sarcoma, the doctors went ahead with her abortion. Her abortion was conducted at a Phoenix-based hospital.
However, later when the authorities contacted her Boston doctor, they were surprised to find that the doctor had no clue about the whole situation and had not even met Zeitner. It was at this point authorities learned that Zeitner had faked her illness in order to get a free abortion.
After this revelation, the authorities comprising of the FBI, office of the inspector general and the Arizona attorney general's office conducted a joint investigation. Their doubts were confirmed and they later arrested Zeitner on numerous charges.
