Unexpected twist in season finale sees the end of the show's most loved character Elena Gilbert, portrayed by Nina Dobrev as Nina exits the series leaving fans wondering.

"The Vampire Diaries" is an extremely popular series that is currently in its sixth season. What started out as a plot of simple girl who would rather die than harm her friends evolved into becoming even more interesting. Elena Gilbert, played by superbly Nina Dobrev, was the show's only human character. According to the plot, Elena had pulled herself together after the death of her parents and come in contact with vampires. Dobrev's character was extremely popular primarily because of the human connect that it added to the show and of course due to the multiple emotions associated to her role. At the end of the third season, the human connect disappeared as Elena was transformed into a vampire. However, the loyalty of her fans still remained as the show's TRP continued to rise.

For six years, Elena played the central character and earned rave reviews from fans as well as critics for her excellent portrayal of the role. But, on Monday, Elena announced that she was quitting the show. According to ET online, Elena chose her Instagram profile to break the news to thousands of fans across the globe. Her exit is scheduled to happen at the end of the on-going season. Meanwhile, Julie Plec, "The Vampire Diaries" executive producer, confirmed Dobrev's exit from the show calling it a bittersweet and beautiful goodbye. She also went on to add that the cast and crew of the show had achieved a certain level of closeness after working together for six years and Dobrev's exit will surely unexpected. However, Plec also extended her good wishes to the actress for her future endeavours.

Another report on Zap2it points out that since Elena is not dead, fans are already speculating a possible comeback sometime in the future.
