Ex-Egypt President Mohammed Morsy, who was convicted for the prison break in 2011, was sentenced to death in a Cairo court last Saturday, according to CNN.

This death sentence is the latest judicial setback for the ousted government official. Morsy, along with more than a 100 defendants, will be referred to the Grand Multi, Egypt's legal authority bearing the highest position.

The Grand Multi will have the last opinion on Morsy's death sentence, which can be executed or denied. The final verdict will be on the second day of June.

The death sentence is the "heaviest sentence" Morsy expected to receive in his case.

Mohamed Badie, leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and Mohamed Saad El-Katatny, a former Parliament speaker, included in the jailbreak case, were also passed on to the Grand Multi.

The Cairo government, established by the military, considers The Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group. The group denied the allegations, particularly the main leaders.

Morsy and the other defendants were indicted working hand-in-hand with Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Group and Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite group.

Morsy, along with his collaborators, broke into several Egyptian prisons last January 2011. The other defendants were charged with the involvement of Morsy's escape from his prison cell, along with 20,000 people.

Ensuing the jailbreak incident was the uprising against former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak that eventually made Morsy the president in Egypt last 2012.

Abdel Moniem Maqsoud, defense lawyer representing The Muslim Brotherhood, revealed that the defense needs to consult with Morsy whether to file an appeal on his current sentence, according to an interview with CNN.

Maqsoud further elucidated that his client didn't recognize 'these trials' and classified the Saturday court hearing as a decision and not a verdict.

"Consequently we will wait until June 2. If there's a conviction, we will continue the legal path that we started the past months, which is to point the legal faults of these verdicts," said Maqsoud.

The sentence charged against Morsy incited several reactions among the public particularly Amnesty International, a human rights group.

Amnesty International states the trials of Morsy and the other defendants served as a 'charade' and depicted the 'appalling state' of the government's criminal justice system. The group strongly condemns the death sentence.

Hamas also opposed the decision, stating that the death sentences given to the two defendants were already deceased.
