About 128 dating websites have been taken down from the World Wide Web as China tightens its grip on online dating websites.

Xinhua news agency reported May 18 that the Cyberspace Administration of China said that the 128 online dating websites identified violated certain policies of the agency, in which, includes spreading pornography, promoting vulgar content, allowing user information to be distributed illegally and not having the complete set of registration records.

The country's Internet watchdog is urging dating websites to make sure that people who want to register should use their real names and could be authenticated. Legitimate online dating sites such Jiayuan.com are expected to benefit from the more stringent policies set by the Cyberspace Administration of China

Xinhua said that Jiayuan CEO Wu Linguang believes the policy will be good for the industry's long-term development. In a separate report, China Daily said that Jiayuan.com is also allocating budget to upgrade the technology it uses on its website.

Meanwhile, another CEO of a major dating website in China, Baihe.com, expressed his support for the campaign. Tian Fanjiang said that his company has rolled out an identity authentication measure, as prescribed by the Ministry of Public Security, on its website.

Capital Normal University's College of Political Science and Law professor Wang Shuqin commented that the administration's new policies will allow companies in the sector to have equal competition and improve legal consciousness.

The campaign, primarily intended to catch fraud and pornography on dating websites, was launched in February, according to the report.

Other Chinese departments that participated in the campaign include the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

China Daily reported that over 20 dating websites were ordered to make some changes, at the risk of suspension. It was also revealed that the crackdown on the fraudulent or pornographic was mostly reported by public users.
