'Breaking Bad' Saga Continues: Let's Convert Sugar To Heroin With A Special Yeast!

Scientists at the University of California Berkley and Concordia University are in the process of brewing morphine (or heroin) from sugar. They recently presented a seminar in which they showcased the process of converting sugar entirely into heroin.
Sugar is a ubiquitous structure which can be easily broken down to form morphine, as per reports by En Gadget. The plan which these scientists are pointing at is not to make people equipped with ready-to-make heroin tips at home, but to produce a cheaper and safer form of painkillers. This idea, if passed, can prove to be groundbreaking and can be used to achieve a less addictive and side effect-free form of painkillers, as per reports by The Guardian.

This research is bound with many controversies already, due to the high amount of heroin being produced. It can be easily mis-used in the illegal drug industry, outweighing its benefits as painkillers.
In addition to this, getting the opiate out of the sugar is a lot more difficult than brewing beer, making this process expensive and complicated. Moreover, no drug was formed with this method till date, making it difficult for the researchers to find funding to carry out the entire project.
The researchers however plan on being completely honest with their study and are adding silent markers to the yeast's DNA, which will allow the concerned authorities to track down the origin of morphine (or heroin) easily.
Only a few screened scientists are allowed to work with the yeast, in secured and secret labs and they are not allowed to share the strain of this yeast in any form, with anyone.
The researchers are still awaiting for the necessary approvals to carry out the entire research as they do not want to abruptly end it at a later stage.
