Boxing News: Tim Bradley Faces Jessie Vargas on June 27

Pound-for-pound great Tim "Desert Storm" Bradley will face undefeated fighter Jessie Vargas in a 12-round welterweight matchup for the vacant WBO Welterweight title at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, June 27.

This is the first time these two highly-rated fighters will perform this year, and it will be against each other.

Bradley (31-1-1, 12 KOs) won the WBO Welterweight title via his controversial 2012 split decision victory over Manny Pacquiao. He then successfully defended it versus Ruslan Provodnikov and Juan Manuel Marquez in 2013, before losing it back to Pacquiao in 2014.

Vargas (26-0, 9 KOs) is the reigning WBA junior welterweight champion. He is moving up to welterweight for a chance to face Bradley in a high-profile bout for HBO. The Roy Jones-trained Vargas was formerly promoted by Mayweather Promotions, but has been with Top Rank since 2012.

The former two-division champion Bradley returns to the ring after another controversial fight, a draw with Diego Gabriel Chaves in December 2014. But in this instance, Bradley is deemed by ringside media as the clear winner after landing 73 more punches than his Argentinian counterpart and noticeably controlling much of the fight.

Meanwhile, Vargas is coming off a successful title defense against Mexican Antonio DeMarco in November last year. He captured the WBA and IBO Light Welterweight titles from Russian Khabib Allakhverdiev in April 2014, successfully defending it twice before going up to welterweight to face the Desert Storm.

The WBO Welterweight crown was won by Floyd Mayweather Jr. after his impressive unanimous decision victory over Manny Pacquiao on May 2. He then vacated it but kept his other two belts, the WBC Welterweight and the WBA Super Welterweight titles.
