Mayweather-Pacquiao Is Damaging For Boxing, Says Ricky Hatton

Britain's former two-division world champion Ricky Hatton said in a recent interview with BBC Sport's Ben Dirs that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao's Fight of the Century "was damaging for the sport."

"I can't imagine there is anyone out there saying they loved it," Hatton told BBC Sport. "Considering they're two all-time greats, the money they walked away with, what the fans had to pay, it was all a bit of a letdown."

"Then when Manny blamed his defeat on a shoulder injury, it soured it even further," he added.

Pacquiao revealed in post-fight interviews that he re-injured a torn right shoulder rotator cuff after the fourth round of the match, which is why he could not release punches as much as he wants to.

Pacquiao promoter and Top Rank boss Bob Arum intimated that the injury was there for seven years, since his ward's bout against Oscar De La Hoya in 2008, as reported by Boxing News 24's Chris Williams. The article went on to say that no one knows for sure why they chose this loss to Mayweather as the time to bring up such an old, recurring injury and not when he had beaten great fighters like Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Timothy Bradley.

With regards to Mayweather's performance, Hatton said that he "is not bothered about pleasing the crowd, he's bothered about doing what he does and getting paid. He doesn't have you on the edge of your seat, let's put it that way,"

A widely-read article by boxing great Evander Holyfield for The Players Tribune titled "Boxing's Fight for Relevance" circulated the web. It talked about his insights on the negative implications to boxing of the Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown.
