NBA Trade Rumors: Paul Pierce To Opt Out Of Wizards Contract And Sign With Clippers?

Speculations arise that Washington Wizards old guard and former NBA champion Paul Pierce wants to opt out of his contract with the D.C. team and finish his career in his hometown Los Angeles with former coach Doc Rivers and the Clippers.

Reportedly, Pierce "will walk away from the second year of his deal ($5.5 million) in Washington in order to finish his career in his hometown, playing for his old Celtics coach and his former teammate-turned-Clippers assistant Sam Cassell for less money," according to David Aldridge's article on the league's official website.

With this impending departure, Aldridge even suggested that the Wizards should acquire a younger player to replace Pierce at their four spot as a "long-term solution" to the team's power forward issues.

Although the man called "The Truth" hinted on retiring after Washington's 91-94 East semis loss to the Atlanta Hawks, he is now allegedly reconsidering to play one more year to have another shot at the Larry O'Brien trophy. And he feels like he can do it in L.A., as reported by The Score's Chris Walder.

The 37-year-old's one and only NBA championship came in 2008 under Rivers' leadership with the Boston Celtics. Walder reports that Pierce will have to accept less money, a veteran's exception maybe, to transfer to the Clippers and have another run at the title, especially if the team will re-sign All-NBA center DeAndre Jordan for maximum salary.

Meanwhile, Kurt Helin of NBC Sports' Pro Basketball Talk said that Pierce's availability will give the 16-year head coach the opportunity to reunite with his former on-court leader, add some needed depth at the Clippers small forward spot, and insert a "veteran voice" inside their locker room. And all of that comes "at an affordable price."

Considering all of these, it would be hard for Rivers to pass this chance of getting back Pierce and winning the NBA title, if the veteran really wants one more shot at it.
