Oculus, the virtual reality headset maker that is currently under Facebook, acquired the 3D Mapping firm Surreal Vision hinting at plans to use the ability of 3D scene reconstruction to develop new video games.
Looks like Oculus is on an acquisition spree since it was taken over by Facebook in 2014. After buying the design team associated to the development of Xbox 360 controller and Kinect as well as the motion tracking firm Nimble VR, Oculus has announced the acquisition of the U.K.-based firm Surreal Vision, which specializes in 3D reconstruction of situations that one sees in real time.

Though there is no official comment by the Oculus team, the news hit headlines when Surreal Vision revealed the details about how exactly the acquisition will be taking place in a detailed blogpost. The company that is now under Oculus, was formed by three PhDs, all of whom are from Andrew Davison's pioneering lab at Imperial College London. The news was confirmed by a report filed on Techcrunch.
Sharing their vision of being associated with Oculus, the three founders issued a statement that was published on The Verge. As per this statement, all of them talked about the various advancements that have propelled the growth of 3D mapping.
In addition, they also stated that the progress was heading towards a stage where the gap between virtual and real is reducing, hinting at a possibility of a time where technologies would lead to the development of systems that would empower people to visit anyone, anywhere. They added that when 3D reconstruction of real time situation will acquire impeccable accuracy, users will successfully be able to perceive virtual world as real, making it a unique experience.
Quoting an example of the SLAM++ project, the founders explained the potential of growth in 3D mapping to diminish the line between virtual and augmented reality.
As of now, it has been confirmed that the three founder members will continue to be associated to the project very closely, as they will soon join the team at Oculus research to continue their pursuit of developing top-grade technology.
