The Oklahoma City Thunders has expressed their intention of acquiring a backup point guard in the upcoming 2015 NBA Draft. Rumors has it that the team has already set their sight to Cameron Payne from Murray State.

Chad Ford from ESPN reported that the Thunders has already promised Payne that he will be drafted by the team in the first round. The Thunders will be the 14th team to pick in the first round of the 2015 NBA Draft.

If these rumors are true, then Payne should feel safe and comfortable come the draft day. The Thunders has had a long standing tradition of fulfilling the promises they have made to aspiring NBA players.

In 2011, the Thunders promised to draft Reggie Jackson in the 24th pick and they did, according to Fox Sports. In 2014, Josh Huestis received the same promise and was drafted by the Thunders in the 29th pick. This year, that promise will no doubt usher Payne to the NBA.

Payne, who currently plays the point guard position for Murray State, stands 6-foot-2. According to NBC Sports, Murray is a strategic pick for any team that needs a player who has excellent passing and scoring skills. Murray's skill set does not make him a significant threat at the painted area but his speed makes him an excellent player to run a pick-and-roll play.

The Thunder only has two active point guards in the roster, Russell Westbrook and backup D.J. Agustin. Westbrook is no doubt the starting point guard for the team but the backup role will have an interesting twist in case the team drafts Payne, according to Thunderous Intentions.

Payne's road to the NBA Draft is what many would call a Cinderella story. He arrived at Murray's doorstep after point guard Isaiah Canaan was drafted to the NBA. Payne's initial role in Murray was backup to Zay Jackson who later succumb to an ACL injury before the season even started.

Murray State head coach Steve Prohm handed Payne the starting point guard position after Jackson's injury. During his first game with Murray State, Payne finished with 21 points.
