Why 'Tron 3' Needs To Hit Theaters Despite Being Killed By Disney

(Photo : REUTERS/DANNY MOLOSHOK) Cast members (L-R) Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Jeff Bridges and director Joseph Kosinski pose together at the after party for the world premiere of the film ''TRON: Legacy'' in Hollywood, California, December 11, 2010.
The "Tron" franchise has just been killed by Disney, but fans are eagerly clamoring for it to be returned to production via different means, including an online petition.
After news hit the web last Saturday that "Tron 3" is to be discontinued, it didn't take long for fans to cry foul and demanded for it to return to production. Wasting no time, an online petition has been made to revive the dead sequel. Geek Tyrant relates that the underperforming "Tomorrowland" may be the one to blame for its cancellation, but no official reports have been made as to why Disney pulled the plug.

Joseph Kosinski was already in talks to direct as early as 2013, with Jesse Wigutow reportedly in the talks to pen the script, as Screenrant reports.
The thing with Tron is that there is much left to the imagination after the events of "Tron: Legacy." Quorra trying to adapt to the real world, or even vice versa is a story on its own, not to mention the curious question everybody has on their minds: what happened to the Grid? What happened to Flynn?
The House of Mouse has previous successes with past live action films, most notably "Maleficent" and "Cinderella," which CNN reports to have earned $527.4 million worldwide. Suffice to say, the recent upset with "Tomorrowland" earning a meek $33 million during Memorial Day weekend, although beating the competition, did not get enough to support the third installation.
On the other hand, the live action roster of Disney is not looking to back out; it is still looking forward to remake all its past animations as live action, including "The jungle Book," and the Emma Watson-starred "Beauty and the Beast."
Overall, there is no reason for Disney to kill off a well-loved franchise that has been part of the Disney family of movies even before they started adapting their animated films into live action. The market is there, and "Star Wars" coming out this December may not be enough to satiate the thirst of geeky fanboys.
