The Connecticut woman who murdered her children was identified as LeRoya Moore. Following her discharge from the hospital where her self-inflicted injuries were treated, she was arrested by police.
While there was speculation that the children died from natural gas, which police found the house to be filled with the day of the murder, the cause of the children's deaths remain unannounced, reported The Associated Press.
Police and firefighters in East Haven found the children after responding to a 911 call from Moore's friend saying that she had threatened suicide.
Officers reportedly found an active natural-gas leak as they arrived at 541 Strong St. in East Haven and saw Moore and her children.
Police said they found the dead children fully clothed and laid on a blanket in the living room. Police determined that the deaths have occurred "for an extended period of time" as they judged from the condition of the bodies and the foul smell inside the home.
Detectives also found 46 bottles and boxes filled with over-the-counter and prescription medications during the search, which include prescription painkillers, sleep aids, anti-depressants, and muscle relaxants.
According to the note left at the children's feet, Moore did not want to leave her kids cared for by an institution or social worker. Years ago, the state reportedly took Moore's parental rights to her other children.
According to the affidavit, portions of the letter read:
"I'm sure there's an expert somewhere that will say the children suffered, but I let them know they were loved very much and they were going to heaven. We said the Lord's Prayer to protect their souls. I know this was meant to end the way it did. I don't know the reason why, but we were meant to die today."
"I'm numb and if I burn for eternity I'll know why I deserve it. ... I couldn't leave any more of my kids to the system. They were in pain and now they're in heaven. I prayed and God knows my heart, he made me the way I am and knew we weren't fit for this world past this time."
On her Facebook page, The Courant said Moore had posted several pictures of the murdered children.
On Wednesday, the 36-year-old was reportedly arraigned in Superior Court for the deaths of 6-year-old Aleisha Moore and 7-year-old Daaron Moore.
During the arraignment, Judge Karen Sequino said bail for Moore would be set at $2 million. She also ordered that Moore must be kept under suicide watch, and that she should also be offered medical and mental health treatment while at Niantic's York Correctional Institution.
In 2014, Moore had been arrested for assault to her ex-husband in front of their children. In 2006, she received child endangerment charges, which include risk of injury to a minor as well as termination of parental rights to her two other children, according to Reuters.
