There have been many sci-fi movies that have shown artificial intelligence in bad light by glorifying the era when machines takeover man-kind and go completely rogue. From "I Robot" to the recent "Avengers" movie, the list is endless. According to Uber Topic, all these movies portray machines as task oriented set-ups that don't want to look beyond the traditional way of doing things and therefore are completely void of any form of reasoning.
However, this fiction may soon be a reality, according to the concerns shared by experts like Bill Gates who recently said that the increasing pace at which artificial intelligence is progressing could pose a threat to the community at large, according to Tech Crunch.
In fact, Bill Gates is not the only one to share these concerns. Even Stephen Hawking, the expert scientist who is known to rely on machines and artificial intelligence to a great extent, has voiced his opinion in this regard. Hawking said that the increasing spread of artificial intelligence actually poses a threat to the entire human race. Another visionary to raise his concern is Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, who went on to compare developing artificial intelligence to the satanic task of summoning a difficult to control demon.
Some gruesome incidents that point towards the cause of concern of these visionaries are times when the otherwise harmless looking Global Positioning System has misguided users to heavy traffic zones, dangerous hilly areas, etc.
However, one point of view is also terming this threat as baseless. This is because, more than a decade ago, people feared something similar predicting that the computer technology will not be able to survive the transition from 1999 to 2000. This never happened, proving the experts wrong.
