Argentina might be the favorites in this game, because Lionel Messi's presence alone, but Uruguay pushed their South American rival to the limit despite the absence of Uruguayan star Luis Suarez, who is still serving his international ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chellini during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Coming off a 2-2 draw performance against Paraguay, Argentina would once again lean on their captain and four-time FIFA Player of the Year winner Messi to lead them to victory. Haunted by their slow start, Messi kept on roaming around the corridors of the squad's camp in La Serena, thinking what went wrong with their executions. Nevertheless, Messi was still adamant, they would improve in the next game with a much stronger team Uruguay.

With both teams looking to avoid a hard matchup against Brazil in the next round, Messi was expecting an all-out battle from the get-go. And indeed, he was right all along as the match was a flat-out physical contest at the Estadio La Portada.

Argentina dictated the pace of the game in the early stage of the match, with Messi, Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero dominating the possession. Uruguay was starting to do what they did on their match against Jamaica, which they won it by having a stubborn defense.

In the first half of the game, there were a few chances of goals, especially when Uruguay showed their ability on counter attacks. Things got worse for Argentina when frustration got the best of manager Tata Martino, who was sent to the stands for arguing with the officials.

However, after 10 minutes, striker Sergio Aguero converted a goal after a nice cross from when his teammate at Manchester City Pablo Zabaleta. Uruguay had a chance to level the score at 1-1 but Rolan blew away a decent look at the goal. Even Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin header was partially blocked and Hull City's Adel Hernandez had a side foot attempt stopped by Arguero.

In the end, Argentina bagged three points and stayed on course to top their group while Uruguay needs to win against Paraguay to keep them in the tournament.
