Researchers from the University of California, San Diego have made the ultimate technology breakthrough that could lead to a leap in the pace of growth by empowering the fiber optic networks with double the speed.

According to SciTech Today, researchers at the University of California have revealed findings that will make it possible to double the speed of fiber optics networks for better efficiency. Through this technology, the strength and the capacity of the signal being transmitted through the fiber optic network can be made stronger and better. The direct impact of this technology could lead to faster and more efficient internet access for users across the globe. This is because a large part of the internet infrastructure consists of fiber optic cable networking.

Explaining the method in which this technology will simplify things for the network designers, Boston Globe said that each time a signal is transmitted, a concentrated beam of light is sent through the fiber optic cable. This light or signal requires to be amplified and repeated at regular intervals in order to ensure that it reaches the end user in the desired format. As the signal has to be repeated at regular intervals, the amount of data that can be carried is also limited; however, with the new technology, the speed of transmission can be increased which will also facilitate transmission of larger amount of data in the same channel.

While doing their experiment, the researchers successfully transmitted a signal through a fiber optic network for 7400 miles, without the need to rejuvenate or repeat it during the process. Even though partially, this research is supported by Google and Sumitomo Electric Industries.

Another advantage of such networks will be their ability to cut the overall transmission costs considerably. The infrastructure of this network, when boosted with a new technology, will be able to eliminate interference and crosstalk to a great extent.

The scientists at the University of California have been able to achieve this feat using a special frequency comb to combine the varying frequency channels.
