The Lakers shot a woeful 2-of-17 in the opening period as they fell behind by 19-5.

Attracting a lot of attention was the match up between the teams' respective top picks in the 2015 draft.

The general observations was that the Knicks' Kristaps Porzingis, who was taken at No. 6, outshined the Lakers' No. 2 pick guard D'Angelo Russell.

The Latvian Porzingis played 18 minutes, scored 9 points and exhibited a good touch from different spots on the floor.

He also had the habit of getting to the free throw line and knew what to do defensively.

Meanwhile, Russell, who scored eight, looked a bit confused with the professional style of basketball, turning the ball over eight times .

The Lakers have three first-rounders in Russell, 27th pick Larry Nance Jr., 27th overall pick; and Julius Randle, the seventh overall pick last year.

The Lakers rallied to close in within five points at halftime and within one early in the third.

However, the Knicks essentially secured the win with a late third quarter burst.

Russell and Randle struggled as Clarkson and Jabari Brown combined for just an eight of 28 field goal connection.

Randle missed his first five shots, before settling in during the fourth quarter.

The 20-year-old has yet to showcase his reported improved jumper, which he never really had a chance to showcase since he's getting to the rim at will. Randle broke his leg in last season's opener but feels so healthy and already explosive.

The 19-year-old Russell committed his eight turnovers against the Knicks while he tried to force the ball to move in. Russell also committed seven turnovers against the Philadelphia 76ers and five against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Experts say he was trying to get better so fast instead of being patient.

Jabari Brown finished just 5-of-14 and 8-of-11 in the free throw line.

Anthony Brown and Larry Nance, Jr. were quiet offensively in their nearly 50 combined minutes, scoring six points on 1-of-7 shooting.

Lakers coach Byron Scott said that the summer league gives their young players a chance to jell together and show what they can bring to the table.
