Speculations have arisen regarding the Miami Heat's backup point guard Mario Chalmers being on the trading block as the team tries to unload salaries to save on luxury tax bill this coming season, as reported by the Miami Herald.

With Miami's recent big signings of Dwayne Wade ($20 million, one-year) and Goran Dragic ($86 million, five years), and the $22.2 million and $10.1 million they owe resident All-Stars Chris Bosh and Luol Deng respectively, the team is set to be charged with a massive luxury tax next season.

Chalmers, whose $4.3 million earnings would charge the Heat around $13 million in taxes, is reportedly the first one who is in danger of being dispatched even for "nothing", as per Grantland.

While there are still no reported takers for the 6-foot-2 playmaker even if there is only one year left in his contract, Miami was said to be keen on moving him along with big man Chris Andersen before the new season starts in October.

Chalmers used to be the starting point guard of the Heat team that competed in four straight NBA Finals during their LeBron James-Big Three championship era. However, since the 2014 Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, the 29-year-old's role have declined and has now become one of the "most expendable piece on the team", according to Fansided.

Rumors suggest that with the starting point guard spot secured with Dragic and the emergence of last year's 24th overall pick Shabazz Napier as a reliable floor general, head coach Erik Spoelstra does not need Chalmers anymore.

Potential teams that could effectively use Chalmers are the Brooklyn Nets and the Houston Rockets who are both lacking at the no.1 position.

The Nets are reportedly planning to start 10-year veteran Jarrett Jack as the replacement for All-Star Deron Williams who was waived last week and then acquired by the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. The team has a huge hole in the backup point guard spot and Chalmers could bring good value in that role.

Meanwhile, the Rockets had problems with the nagging injury of starter Patrick Beverley which some analysts believe spelled doom for Houston during last season's Western Conference Finals. Without a reliable backup floor general, the team settled for natural shooting guard and old hand Jason Terry to carry on ball-handling duties.
