The 6'10" center signed a one-year deal for the veterans minimum on Tuesday.
The Pelicans will be the fourth team for the 30-year-old Perkins, having been a member of the Boston
Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers signed him as a free agent last February after he was waived by the Utah Jazz, who acquired him as part of the Enes Kanter trade with the Thunder.
According to cleveland.com, Perkins chose the Cavaliers last February for a chance to play with LeBron
James over a reunion with former head coach Doc Rivers.
While his presence was felt behind the scenes with his locker set adjacent to Tristan Thompson,
Perkins hardly made an impact during games, averaging 2.6 points and 2.4 rebounds whileplaying sparingly.
Perkins holds career averages of 5.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks, the NBA.com noted.
He is limited in offense, lateral agility and vertical jump, making him a hard sell to most NBA teams who are in the hunt for versatile, athletic big men to fortify their rotations.
Perkins also drew interest from the Houston Rockets, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers in free agency.
However, the Clippers could only offer a veteran's minimum with no more exceptions available, ESPN
reported.
Perkins was drafted with the 27th pick in 2003 by the Memphis Grizzlies, which traded him to the Boston
Celtics.
He established himself as a serviceable defensive center who could body up some of the league's more
imposing post threats,
During the 2004-05 season, Perkins became known as one of the Celtics tougher players and played
therole of an "enforcer."
Perkins stayed with the Cetlics until 2011, winning a championship in the 2007-08 season.
He was traded to the Thunder where he was signed to a multi-year deal and played there until last February before the trade to the Cavaliers.
