Petra Kvitova has had a few good tournament runs this year with two titles under her belt. But the former Wimbledon champion is far from her form that brought her to glory at the All-England Club for two years in a row. What could have been a sure-win for the Czech turned out to be a disappointment as she lost 2-6, 3-6 in the second round of the Rogers Cup to former world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka.

The match, which lasted an hour and 28 minutes, produced fine tennis from Azarenka who won 65% of her first serve.

"It feels good to have that level of consistency I showed today throughout the whole match," Azarenka said of her first win against a player in the Top 4 since 2013. "To play against a top player and have that level, it's definitely something I want to get more and more of that, especially before a tournament like the US Open. You really want to push yourself. So for me it was a great experience. I'm really happy with the way I played tonight."

The loss could hamper Kvitova's preparations for the US Open which starts a few weeks from now. Though she still hopes to play in the grand slam, the world no. 4 is currently undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with a viral condition called mononucleosis or "kissing disease" which leads to fever, swollen glands, fatigue and lethargy. The illness has plagued her this season and it may have contributed to her early exits at the past 3 grand slams and caused her to withdraw from big tournaments.

"I had a sore throat and I wanted to kill it so I had antibiotics after Wimbledon," Kvitova said as reported by CNN. "Unfortunately I didn't kill it and that's why it showed my immune system was low. So I had more tests and it (mononucleosis) showed up."

The disease is not something unheard of in the pro tour as there have been a few players reported to have contracted it as a result of the rigorous training life and schedule. Roger Federer once had it and was able to recover but other players like Robin Soderling remain inactive due to the illness.

Kvitova stressed, however, that she was cleared to play at the Rogers Cup but she's far from her best form.

"Of course I still feel tired and a little bit sleepy. I don't know if it's the jet lag or this thing," she said. "I will try my best for sure. We are making the schedule smart with the practicing so I'm hoping it will be fine soon."
