Contrary to expectations, the practice of getting drunk before having sex is still prevalent in middle-aged people, according to a study from the University of Otago in New Zealand.
Scoop reported that the New Zealand research paper was published in the PLOS One Medical Journal.

Being older does not always mean being wiser, as the study revealed that such sexual encounters can lead to negative consequences for both parties.
The researchers showed special interest in people who have reached the age of 38 and data gathered from them revealed some interesting facts. Almost 1 out of 10 males admitted that they had gotten drunk before a sexual encounter within the year of the interview. For the females, almost two out of ten admitted the same behavior. In contrast, two out of the ten middle age men and women said they did not touch any alcohol.
The same survey also showed that almost 2 out 10 males and females, who had taken alcohol before having sex, suffered some negative consequences like forgetting to use protection against sexually transmitted disease (STD) or pregnancy. Some also said that they would not have sex with that particular person had they been sober. One of the reasons cited by many is that drinking alcohol helped them have sex.
Head researcher Professor Jennie Connor said the risky behavior of the middle-aged persons were probably due to their heavy drinking habits when they were younger. She added that the study also showed that a majority of the population of New Zealand are regular alcohol drinkers.
Many in the 38-year-old age group have reported that they are drinking more heavily as opposed to the other age groups. Many of the people interviewed aged 26 to 32, who got heavily drunk before sex, admitted that they contracted STD or got an abortion.
Professor Connor advised people of all age groups to consider the ill effects of alcohol if they want to avoid contracting STD or getting pregnant as well as any regrets after the sex encounter.
