It's becoming increasingly clear Apple's iPhone 6 will be launched on Sept. 9.

U.S. publication Recode, trusted for its previous accurate Apple reports, said Apple will have a big media event on the second Tuesday of September.

Recode said the event's focal point are the next-gen iPhones that are expected to sport larger 4.7-inch and 5.5 inch displays and run new A8 processors.

A report from Business Insider said the new iPhone frames are larger and thinner than the existing version. Based on the images from iPhone accessories maker Feld & Volk, the new smartphone will have the curved edges people saw in leaked pictures over the last few months.

There is doubt about the display sizes shown in the images, however. The technical drawings from leaked photos suggest that the smaller phone's camera lens is flush with the back frame but the photo shows a protruding lens.

Other sources concluded that the leaked images are of the larger iPhone 6 model.

The larger iPhone 6 might come later than the smaller model. It is also widely believed that the larger iPhone 6 will feature a new form-factor that is lighter and thinner. It will also boast of an extra durable sapphire glass coating.

People expect the hybrid iPhone 6 will fuse tablet and smartphone functions in one device. The phone will be more expensive on release date, likely starting at about US$300 with contracts and more than US$700 for unlocked models.

DigiTimes said bigger players such as LG, Samsung, HTC and Sony are weakening because of aggressive Chinese competitors, including Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo.

Now, Apple is about to undergo a massive overhaul to clear over 100 million units in the last quarter of this year.

Apple may be rebranded as a budget-friendly smartphone but projections will only be confirmed come late September or early October when the iPhone 6 finally debuts worldwide.
