After a long wait, the Dallas Mavericks have finally gotten their 'star' center.

That is of course, if they're looking for a 'star' for the NBA's 2015-2016 blooper reel.

Center Javale McGee has reportedly agreed on a non-guaranteed, 2 year deal with a team option to play for the Dallas Mavericks. Known for never really reaching his full athletic potential, McGee only averages 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks for his career. Rick Carlisle and the Mavericks will see if they can revive his career, and while they may have the means to do so, it is easily more said than done.

Most recently playing just 28 games in the past 2 seasons with the Nuggets and the Sixers, McGee is currently recovering from a leg injury he sustained awhile back. Dallas remainds optimistic that he will be available for training camp and for the rigors of the NBA season.

McGee joins Zaza Pachulia and Samuel Dalembert as a group of centers that have been acquired by the team to make up for DeAndre Jordan's abrupt change of heart from joining their team. Rick Carslise and the Mavericks hope that they can turn Javale, who is known for his mental lapses and boneheaded plays, into a servicable center in a playoff caliber team. However, McGee struggled to get meaningful minutes in the depleted 76ers team, who traded for him at the trade deadline last year for a protected first round pick. They then waived him in March.

For the Dallas Mavericks, this is a low risk, high reward signing. A real project, McGee will have to right for frontcourt minutes against Jeremy Evans, Charlie Villanueva, Dwight Powell, Maurice N'Dour, and Brandon Ashley. Based on pure talent alone, McGee should be able to get minutes. However, talent is not the issue with McGee. Only time will tell if Rick Carlisle and the Dallas Mavericks can place their trust on the guy who once took multiple ill-advised shots on route to a triple double that now Rockets coach Kevin McHale called a "bad triple-double".

If Javale McGee can tap into his potential and show maturity, the Dallas Mavericks are in for a treat. Pachulia is widely considered to be average at best, while Samuel Dalembert was once suspended during his first tenure with the Dallas Mavericks for oversleeping and arriving late to practice. Still, this by no means guarantees the Mavs will get a spot in next years playoffs. With the Warriors, Rockets, Spurs, Grizzlies, Thunder and DeAndre Jordan's Clippers rounding out the contenders out West, the Mavs will have to fight with the much younger New Orleans Pelicans, Utah Jazz and Sacremento Kings for the last 2 playoff spots.

There is still reason to be optimistic in Dallas, however, with Dirk Nowiztki and Rick Carslisle continuing to lead the charge. The Mavs have not registered a losing season in over a decade and have only missed the playoffs once, in 2012-2013. They hope that Javale McGee and other new additions like Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews can keep their playoff hopes alive.
