World No. 2 Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai escaped with a victory against Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, 7(8)-6(6) 7-5, in the women's doubles edition of the Rogers Cup on Friday.
The French Open ladies' doubles champions had a tough first set as both teams held serves to force the set into a tiebreak. At tiebreak, the two teams still wouldn't let up until a crucial error by the Czech pair, which gave Peng and Hsieh a two-point advantage to win the set.

The second set had the same action as the fifth-seeded Czechs would not easily allow their opponent to come away with a victory. They leveled the set at five apiece until the Chinese got an opportunity to break and win the match to advance to the semifinals.
Opposite their match, the fourth-seed team of Cara Black and Sania Mirza also advanced to the semis after beating the sixth-seeded duo of Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, 6-2, 6-1.
Peng and Hsieh will face Black and Mirza in the semifinals on Saturday, while top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci against sisters Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan will vie for the other slot in the finals.
Errani and Vinci have won the Australian Open early this year and also the recent Wimbledon Championships. Peng and Hsieh, on the other hand, won the French Open against the Italian duo 6-4, 6-1.
Both teams are on target for a clash in the finals since their matchup at Roland Garros.
Peng and Hsieh were ranked No. 1 after winning the French Open but slipped down to the No. 2 after Errani and Vinci won Wimbledon, where they were eliminated in the third round by eventual runners-up Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic.
The fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year will be at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows slated to start on Aug. 25.
