Phillip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms that will keep the franchise quarterback in San Diego through 2019. This contract is going to be worth $84 million, in which $65 million is guaranteed.
The $65 million is the largest guaranteed contract given to an NFL player ever.

Kevin Acee of San Diego Union Tribune confirmed the news, stating on twitter: "Philip Rivers has agreed to a contract extension."
This news will allow Chargers fans to breathe a sigh of relief. Many were worried that the star quarterback would bolt elsewhere, as Rivers reportedly told Union Tribune previously that he was comfortable with playing out his contract for negotiating a new one. In this article written in March, Rivers hinted that he isn't comfortable with the idea of the Chargers being relocated to Los Angeles, stating "The good thing is I'm not under contract in a year where we'd potentially be in Los Angeles."
Rivers, 33, is one of the key pieces for the Chargers. Since joining the Chargers in 2004 in a draft-day trade that involved Eli Manning, Rivers led the Chargers to 5 playoff appearances, 1 AFC Championship game, and 4 division titles. He has also played in the Pro Bowl 5 times.
The Chargers, who ended last season with a 9-7 record, finished third in AFC West. They did not qualify for the NFL postseason, however. The Chargers will continue to be a good but not great team unless the front office surrounds Rivers with better pieces.
It is unsure whether or not the Chargers will continue to stay in San Diego for the long term, but at the very least we know that Rivers will remain on the team for the long haul. His largest issue with signing a new contract was having to move from San Diego, but since he has decided to sign with them there has been rising speculation that the Chargers are likely to stay.
The new contract will keep Rivers with the Chargers until he is 38.
