NBA News & Rumors: Sixers' Joel Embiid To Have Foot Surgery Again, Will Miss Second Straight Season

The Philadelphia Sixers' promising 7-foot center Joel Embiid is set to miss his first two seasons as a professional as he is scheduled to have a right foot surgery again on Tuesday.

The former Kansas Jayhawks standout has yet to play his first pro game after being drafted third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft following his pre-draft surgery last year to repair a stress fracture in his right foot.

Yahoo Sports reported that Embiid will undergo a bone graft operation like what former league MVP Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder received in March of this year.

Team physicians discovered after a routine CT scan procedure two months ago that the 21-year-old's right foot was not healing as fast and as properly as it should be, which is why a second operation was needed.

Meanwhile, ESPN indicated that Embiid's right foot injury was not covered by the league's insurance policy, and so the Sixers must pay his $9 million salary stipulated in the first two years of his rookie contract even though he had not played a single game for the ball club.

Moreover, even if the contract itself was insured, being one of Philadelphia's top five biggest salaries, the league will not cover it for the Sixers as well.

If the insurance on the center's foot was approved, the team would have collected $5.4 million back from the NBA.

It should be noted that the guaranteed salary in Embiid's deal only covers the first two years of his contract. Next year, the Sixers can exercise a team option and can already release their injury-plagued player if the owners and management decide so.

Bleacher Report said that the Sixers are "concerned" that Embiid's latest re-broken bone could be "career-threatening," and so there are plenty of rumors that he may actually be waived by Philadelphia next season.

The Sixers selected 19-year-old Jahlil Okafor from Duke as their third pick in last June's draft. They also have two blossoming centers, Nerlens Noel and Henry Sims, who are reportedly doing well in the team's planned rebuilding. It seems like there would be no space left for Embiid even if he comes back healthy next year.

The Cameroon national last played almost two years ago for his college team, the Jayhawks. If everything goes as planned, he will be ready to join the team in training camp next season.
