Despite issues about the new turtles' snouts or lack thereof, haters have been pushed aside as the new reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" earned $65 million in its US debut.

"TMNT" was expected to debut at $50 million to $55 million domestically.

The film's performance is said to be indicative of the audience's appetite for family-friendly fare.

Gaining a B CinemaScore, the movie has earned $97.3 million worldwide, which immediately prompted Paramount chief Brad Grey and producer Michael Bay to pursue plans to release a sequel on June 3, 2016.

Screenwriters for the flick, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Neme, will also be writing the sequel.

The movie, directed by Jonathan Liebesman, stole the top spot from the much-talked about "Guardians of the Galaxy".

Both "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" over-performed despite early doubts that either would be worth watching, propping up a somewhat troubled summer box office. Two weeks ago, theater profits were down by 20 percent and, although the two movies helped the industry, revenue is still at a historic decrease, 16.5 percent lower than last year.

Males made up 61 percent of "TMNT" moviegoers and 45 percent of them were below 25 years of age.

The movie stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Noel Fisher, William Fichtner, Jeremy Howard, Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Danny Woodburn, Abby Elliott, and Minae Noji.

The film revolves around four mutant turtle brothers from the sewer who work with Fox to save New York City from the film's devious villain, Shredder.

Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman shared that the new reboot was quite a task because of the great, undeniable responsibility not to disappoint audiences who have grown up loving the characters. Goodman added that the tricky part was creating a newer version of the turtles, without disrespecting the old ones.

Paramount chief Brad Grey stated, "To know moviegoers are embracing the Turtles with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for."
