The Washington Wizards are not willing to offer Bradley Beal a four-year maximum contract just yet in its desire to land hometown superstar Kevin Durant next season.

According to CSN Washington's J.Michael, Beal insist he deserves a max contract but the Wizards want to preserve their cap space for Durant and offered less.

This is the reason why the the parties haven't progressed much on their discussion about a contract extension this summer.

The Wizards reportedly offered an extension "probably close to the max."

If Beal remains unsigned this summer, the player becomes a restricted free agent in 2016, which would allow other teams to offer him a max-contract.

If that happens, the Wizards could match that deal.

Beal's current deal covers  $14,236,685 in cap space while a max contract starts at $20,947,250.

The scheme is for the Wizards to use the extra $6.7 million in cap space for Durant and then exceed the cap to re-sign Beal.

Michael believes that Beal will eventually get his max extension next season and signing Durant could also be somehting the guard would like.

The 22-year-old Beal is among NBA's best young guards and has the potetial to become an All-Star player.
Unfortunately, injuries have hindered his development a bit.

If healthy, Beal has proven his ability to be at an elite level, averaging 23.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in 10 playoff outings.

In fact, NBA skills trainer Drew Hanlen, who worked out with Beal during the latter's high school days, thinks the guard will be a first-time All-Star in the coming season, Sports Illustrated noted.

Waiting to give Beal a max extension is a certainly a hint that they're going to make a major splash in next year's free agency.
