Houston Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer had an excellent first game as the team's official starter, leading them to a 27-13 week 3 NFL Preseason game win on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, as per ESPN.

The 29-year-old former Tom Brady backup completed 7 out of 11 passes for 82 yards, with no sacks and interceptions, leading to a touchdown and a field goal. He also had an 86.2 rating for the game.

Texans offensive coordinator George Godsey was all praises to the six-year pro, saying that Hoyer had been "first class" and "very consistent" in handling his new role of Houston's starting quarterback and his hard-fought competition with teammate Ryan Mallett, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

"I love the way he commands the huddle. I love the way he gets guys going," Godsey said, who was with Hoyer during his stint with the New England Patriots. "He's very smart. He does a good job with situational football. He takes coaching well and does a good job communicating with players."

Head coach Bill O'Brien recently chose Hoyer to become Houston's starting signal caller over close competitor Mallett, which had created some intrigue within the team's players.

Mallett, who did not attend Thursday practice for undisclosed reasons, was reportedly "a little bit" angered by the coach's decision initially, but he is apparently determined not to be affected by the relegation to backup role in the long run.

"There was nothing to put behind me," said Mallett. "I felt like we went out there and executed our game plan and we moved the football and scored some points on them."

Mallett was also outstanding in his time on the field on Sunday, going 9-of-17 for 77 yards and also a touchdown. He was also not sacked and did not throw any interception for a rating of 84.7.

Meanwhile, NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk indicated that Hoyer showed great chemistry with starting wideout DeAndre Hopkins in their series during the game. Hoyer found Hopkins twice during the opening quarter resulting in a touchdown for the Texans.

The Texans offense looked solid against the Saints during the starters versus starters opening drives and O'Brien is hoping that they could sustain it coming into their regular season opener next week at home against the Kansas City Chiefs.
