The Irish actor is dark and intense in the movie's official trailer. Playing King Macbeth is no easy task but Fassbender seems to have immersed himself in the character easily.

The film stayed true to its Medieval Scotland setting. The visual design is powerful and mesmerizing. It's both cinematic and theatrical without going overboard. Acclaimed director Justin Kurzel is doing the adaptation of the tragedy.

Cotillard matched Fassbender's intensity as she portrays the scheming Lady Macbeth.

If you're not aware of the story, Macbeth encounters three witches who prophesied that he will be king. Influenced by his cunning wife, he kills the reigning king and takes the throne. He later on succumbs to madness and dies.

Despite being the shortest of all Shakespeare's tragedies, "Macbeth" is considered as the most powerful because of its theme rooted in political ambition, betrayal, and psychological turmoil.

The film also stars Elizabeth Debicki as Lady Macduff, Sean Harris as Macduff, David Thewlis as Duncan, Jack Reynor as Malcolm, and Paddy Considine as Banquo.

The film is an early favorite for Best Picture for the Oscars and Fassbender for Best Actor along with Eddie Redmayne for "The Danish Girl," Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Revenant," and Jason Sagal for "The End of the Tour."

Fassbender's upcoming projects include the "Assassin's Creed" and "X-Men: Apocalypse."

"Macbeth" hits the big screen on Dec. 4.
