Pippa Middleton trained on the terrain before she participated at the Otillo swim-run in Sweden on Monday. A spokesperson of the race's website said that Middleton was clever to come to country ahead of the race and train on the terrain.

It was probably the smartest thing that anyone taking part in the race could do, the commentator said on the live feed of the website.

The younger sibling of the Duchess of Cambridge took part in the 47-mile swim-run, People reported. The 32-year-old was there to raise money for charity, not to win the race. In spite of the inclement weather conditions, the brunette beauty came 82nd in the final laderboard completing the course in 13 hours, four minutes and 24 seconds. She had previously said she anticipated taking at least 12 hours to finish.

Overjoyed after crossing the finish line, Pippa was all smiles. "It was one of the hardest things I've done! The toughest part was the long swim with the cold water and big waves. But the scenery was beautiful and I love the team part of it," she said.

She finished along with her team mate Jons Bartholdson, just eight seconds in front of her brother James Middleton, 28 and his team mate James Matthews, Pippa ex-boyfriend.

The columnist and writer opted to forgo her birthday celebration with her family and boyfriend for a later date and went for the event supported by her brother.

The day after her birthday, Middleton woke up at 4 a.m. to start the endurance event, which was spread across 26 islands of the archipelago and completed over 50 transitions from land to water. She smiled throughout the race and at one point she even gave a thumbs-up.

Apart from the rough terrain, the competitors had to cope with a strong north-west wind that made crossing the chilly open waters of the Baltic Sea, much more difficult. More than 20 couples failed to complete the course and many were still running at dusk.

Swede Bjorn Englund and Canadian Paul Krochak emerged winners finishing in eight hours and 29 minutes. Michael Lemmel, founder of the swim-run spoke in an interview before the race. For him, just being able to cross the finish line was a big achievement. All the teams raised funds for the Michael Matthews Foundation, set up in honor of James Matthew's brother who died on a mountain climbing trek.
