Too Much Sitting Linked To Liver Dysfunction

A new Korean Study has revealed that too much of sitting increases the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

According to a report in Financial Express, study conducted on middle-aged Koreans established that constant sitting and very low strenuous activity may lead to the occurrence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

In the latest research report published in the Journal of Hepatology, research workers reviewed the physical examination reports of 140,000 Koreans who underwent a physical health examination between March 2011 and December 2013 , to investigate if any kind of identified synptoms can be due to the amount of body fat . Physical activity level and sitting time were analyzed using the questionnaire. The study established relation between the association of sitting time and physical activities level with NAFLD.

"We found that prolonged sitting time and decreased physical activity level were positively associated with the prevalence of NAFLD in a large sample of middle-aged Koreans," said lead investigator Seungho Ryu, of the Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in South Korea.

According to Youth Health Magazine, almost 38,000 subjects who participated in the study showed occurrence of the disease, while deskbound routine as well as less physical activity are significantly associated with the disease occurrence. The condition is noticeable even for individuals who had a normal body weight (body mass index under 23).

"Our findings suggest that both increasing participation in physical activity and reducing sitting time may be independently important in reducing the risk of NAFLD, and underlines the importance of reducing time spent sitting in addition to promoting physical activity," said co-author Yoosoo Chang, of Sungkyunkwan University.

NAFLD is building-up of fat tissues on the liver. During the early stages of the disease, the individual may not experience any difficulty or any noticeable symptom and the disease remains latent unless he goes through a series of liver panel tests.

If the condition remains undetected, the fat tissues may lead to acute liver inflammation, leading to cirrhosis of the liver. It can lead to irreversible liver malfunctioning.
