YouTube Videos To Feature Shopping Ads Soon

Online shopping

YouTube might look more like a Home Shopping Network with its 'shopping ads' to roll out over the next few months.

Google's YouTube is set to roll out a new ad product that will let its videos become 'shoppable'. This allows companies to purchase visual ads with corresponding links that will direct viewers to buy products on their own sites from any video on YouTube.

Rolling out Google Shopping ads to viewers in the coming months, this attempt is geared towards pushing one of the most popular video platforms as a 'digital storefront', according to Gadgets360. The company announced on Sept. 29, Tuesday, the inclusion of Shopping ads for YouTube videos -- working similarly to Google Shopping ads as seen on Google. This feature will enable viewers and interested consumers to shop directly via any YouTube videos. Likewise, it is also anticipated that it would open a wider horizon in terms of monetizing product-focused videos.

In a blog post, Video Ads Product Management Director Diya Jolly further discussed that the Shopping ads would appear like Cards as previously announced in March and aimed at replacing annotations. "We've kept the format similar to Cards and TrueView for shopping, so users can easily recognize and click on the "i" icon at the top right of a video to view the shopping ads," Jolly explained.

As included in The Times of India report, it seems that for YouTube video creators, this new type of ad means they now have another potential revenue stream to make money out of their videos. Thus, YouTube sees this as another way to draw off more money from TV ads to digital -- hoping to go with such pitch that these ads can target users who clearly look for something to buy or are interested in online shopping.

"With this type of ad, you're now able to measure your ROI much better than you could on TV," Director Jolly added.

As of this writing, no specific dates have been disclosed yet as to when the 'shopping ads' on YouTube will commence. Thus, it opts to continue tweaking its look and feel before the ads roll out this fall.
