China Thinks Its 'A Bad Idea' To Discuss North Korea Rights

(Photo : Getty Images) China has once again discouraged the United Nations Security Council from discussing concerns of human rights abuses in North Korea.

China on Tuesday emphasized that it would not be a good idea for the United Nations Security Council to restore dialogue about North Korea’s alleged violation of human rights, according to Reuters.

North Korea has been under fire following a United Nations inquiry into accusations of abuse, which compared violent acts in the country to those committed during the Nazi era.

United Nations diplomats, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, suggested that the council should request for another assembly regarding the human rights situation in the ‘Hermit Nation.' This time period is ideal as the United States will have the presidency of the 15-member body in December. This plan allegedly has the support of several western countries as well as Japan and South Korea.

“I heard the suggestion, I believe it’s a bad idea,” said Liu Jieyi, the U.N. Ambassador of China in an interview with the reporters on Tuesday. Liu, who strongly opposed further discussions, added that the Security Council’s scope did not include human rights.

The council discussed North Korea in December 2014 with human rights on top of its agenda for promoting international peace and charity. This led to an objection by China that degenerated into a procedural vote. Along with Russia, China maintains a strong alliance with North Korea. That meeting ensued after a groundbreaking U.N. commission of inquiry investigation into reports of widespread human rights abuse in North Korea.

The U.N. General Assembly, which comprises 193 members, advised the U.N. Security Council to refer North Korea’s case to the International Criminal Court. The diplomats stated that there is a possibility that China would refuse any bid to refer North Korea to the ICC.

Liu said it remains unclear if China would demand another procedural vote is an assembly was gathered. He explained that the Security Council should focus more on North Korea’s denuclearization and a dialogue instead, according to ABC News.

This year, the 15 members of the U.N. Security is yet to summon another meeting to focus on the issue.
