Retired boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. has criticized Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach for the "f*d up" job he did in Miguel Cotto's corner during the Puerto Rican's 12-round unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez last Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Speaking to Fight Hype's Ben Thompson, the former pound-for-pound king said that "Cotto didn't have the right trainer" and that Roach "wasn't giving him the right advice."

Roach reportedly believed that Cotto was ahead on the scorecards during the middle rounds of the match, therefore he failed to instruct the four-division world champion to "pick up the pace" to have a chance of winning the close fight.

"If you're losing, your coach don't need to wait for you to get to the 10th round to tell you that you losing. If your coach knows you're losing in the 4th round, if that was the case, that's when a trainer needs to step up and say, 'You know what? Pick up the f*g pace. You losing'," Mayweather ranted.

The undefeated American does could not accept the admiration Roach has been receiving within the boxing community. He said that "Cotto was fighting the same way before" he signed a deal with the seven-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year winner.

"Pacquiao was fighting the same before he got with Freddie Roach. Both guys were already world champions before they got to Freddie Roach," he said. "But when Pacquiao lost to Marquez and he lost to me, they still keep talking about how legendary the coach is. When are y'all going to get on the coach's ass and say, 'You know what? This coach done a f*d up job'."

Mayweather and his father, Mayweather Sr., are well-known critics of Roach.

The five-division world champion may have a point about Roach neglecting to warn Cotto that he was losing the fight from the sixth round onwards and for failing to unleash him in the late rounds, but is he the right person to objectively analyze the performance of Cotto's corner given his disdain for Roach?

Bleacher Report recently mentioned that although many fans do not like Mayweather's run-and-duck style, "he's one of the smartest boxing minds of this generation", which makes any of his opinions interesting to any boxing fan.
