Despite the waning appeal of phablet devices, Huawei still thinks this is a lucrative market. The Chinese tech giant unveiled its latest phablet on Thursday. The Huawei Mate 8 sports a 6-inch display and has several specs to boast of.

The Mate 8's 6-inch LCD screen has a resolution of 1080p and pixel density of 367 pixels per inch. Although not as crisp as that of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, the Huawei Mate 8 still brings respectable display specs on the table.

In terms of software, the Huawei Mate 8 runs on the latest Google Android Marshmallow 6.0. Huawei added its own touch on top of the Marshmallow interface, called the Huawei Emotion 4.0. Many tech experts have noted that the updates tends to run a bit slow when a company integrates its own user-interface on top of Android.

At its heart, the Huawei Mate 8 boasts an octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 950 processor. It has four 2.3GHz Cortex A72 chips and four 1.8GHz Cortex A53 chips. The processor power is backed by either a 4GB or 3GB of internal memory, depending on the model.

The Huawei Mate 8 is available in two variants depending on storage space; 32GB or 64GB. For users demanding additional storage space, it can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card.

The phablet sports an 8-megapixel front-facing camera and a 16-megapixel rear facing camera. Both cameras are from Sony, according to Engadget.

Just like most high-end devices that hit the market recently, the Huawei Mate 8 sports a fingerprint sensor at the back. The sensor can be used to unlock the phone and verify its user's identity. This feature can be used to secure photos, unlock certain apps and turn off the alarm. According to CNet, users based in China can use the sensor to authorize mobile payments.

The Huawei Mate 8 has a 4,000mAh battery pack that supports quick charging technologies.

The Huawei Mate 8 is expected to debut in the United States at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in January.
