United States' politicians are already moving beyond how it happened that a Democrat won the job and looking ahead to the ramifications of voters' decision following the announcement of the results of the Louisiana governor's race. The victory of Democrat state Reps John Bel Edward and the defeat of Repubilcan Sen. David Vitter is expected to have a sort of political domino effect that could reach well beyond Louisiana politics, according to Time.

Edwards' 12% point win over Vitter was a like a rebuke to the senator after a race that became more about personal integrity of Vitter than any policy debates. As a result of the embarrassing loss, Vitter quickly announced he would not run next year for re-election for a third term. This has created a rare vacancy for his Senate seat, Newstar reported.

Republicans have been preparing for the campaign for quite a while and at the same time, several politicians had been interested in the seat for months. A Republican from Lafayette, Charles Boustany, released a pre-announcement of his own Senate race plans two days after Vitter's re-election. From the statement, it is clear that Boustany intends to run for Vitter's seat. He said that he would make an official Senate candidacy declaration soon.

Just hours of Boustany's statement, John Fleming of Minden, followed up with his statement also, he too said in the near future will make his Senate race announcement.

According to YouTracker, other Republicans considering the Senate race are John Kennedy, who is a treasurer, Scott Angelle, Public Service Commissioner who was the third-place finisher during governor's race; and Rob Maness, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate last year. Mitch Landrieu, a Democrat and also the new Orleans Mayor, also has not closed the door on a bid for the position.

It will be possible to create openings for congressional district seats if Boustany and Fleming both stick it out in the Senate race. Already, some possible contenders are starting to discuss their campaign options.
