The participants of the study were patients with kidney stones. The patients' weight, height and body mass index (BMI) were checked. They were subjected to routine blood and urine tests. Their source of water, diet, previous history of stones and treatment were recorded. After the patients had undergone surgical treatment and the kidney stones extracted from them, the stones were analyzed to identify its chemical composition.
A strong association between diabetes mellitus, BMI and also with lower urinary pH was shown in the study.
"It is proposed that uric acid urolithiasis may be added to the conditions that potentially are associated with insulin resistance," the researchers suggested.
The results of the study also showed that the dominant chemical composition from the extracted stones is calcium oxalate and uric acid.
"Among the diabetics, 70% of the stones were calcium oxalate and 30% were uric acid calculi whereas among the non‑diabetics 89% of the stones were calcium stones and 11% were uric acid calculi. The incidence of uric acid calculi in the diabetics was significantly high," the researchers stated in their study.
The results of the study have led them to conclude that people with type 2 diabetes are more likely to have kidney stones.
The researchers of the study have recommended that people who are suffering from renal stones must also have themselves checked for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
