Experts are constantly looking for new technologies that could upgrade the current Wi-Fi technology. The newest technology that is slowly gaining attention among tech experts is Li-Fi, a light based data delivery method that promises speeds of up to 224GB per second.
Li-Fi technology use protocols that are almost similar to the ones employed by the RF-band 802.11. On the other hand, Li-Fi has additional standards that eliminates the impacts of ambient lightning as well as interference.

Despite its promising benefits, there are certain restrictions that makes it difficult for Li-Fi to be implemented in the real-world. Li-Fi does come with the advantage of not interfering with radio signals. However, the biggest restriction behind the technology is that light cannot pass through walls. In this simple aspect, Wi-Fi, which uses radio signals, has the most significant advantage. Li-Fi technology experts are planning to implement it for wireless communications on airplanes, according to Hue Wire.
Earlier this year, an Estonian startup Velmenni tested a commercial implementation of the Li-Fi technology. Velmenni's prototype uses an LED bulb to transmit data. While the Velmenni tests showed promising results, the technology is still very difficult to implement since it still depends on laboratory-grade Simulink and MATLAB setup paried with photodiodes. There is also a big possibility that in the real world setup which is full of light pollution and other variables, the technology might not work the way it does in a laboratory environment, according to Tech Crunch.
Experts are expecting that they will be able to find a workaround in order to fix the restriction of Li-Fi technology. Tech analyst are speculating that the new technology will be implemented sometime within the next five years.
With proper implementation, Li-Fi is expected to replace Wi-Fi technology. Despite this fact, experts believe that within its earlier stage, Li-Fi can be used in conjunction with Wi-Fi in order patch both of their deficiencies.
