In 1968, the singer-songwriter bought the car and had it painted red with a mural that included the images of landscapes, herself and Big Brother, butterflies, mushrooms and skulls.
The car became quickly identified with her and was considered as one of the most recognizable vehicles. Janis' fans witnessed how constantly she drove it. This also gave them the chance to leave notes under the car's windshield wiper for their beloved idol.
Janis Joplin died as a result of heroin overdose at the age of 27 on October 04, 1970. When she failed to show up for a recording session, people knew where to find here because the Porsche was parked in the garage of a hotel in Hollywood.
The car went under the care of Janis' siblings, Michael and Laura Joplin who shared it for about 30 years. According to Michael, they have to save the car and so the customized paint of the Porsche was replaced with light gray soon after it started to peel off. Then Janis' family had several artist worked on the original design and the artwork was restored.
For 20 years now, the car has been on loan to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland by Michael and Laura Joplin. The income from the auction is going to be used for the benefit of social affairs in remembering Janis Joplin.
