With only days away from the premiere of "Star Wars: Force Awakens" fans are still left with one lingering question, what has happened to Luke Skywalker?

Having been purposely left out of all promotional material by director J.J Abrams, fans have had little or no exposure to the galaxy's last remaining Jedi Master. Many have begun to fear the worst for Luke as rumors have spread that he has gone to the dark side of the Force.

This rumor does have some merit to it however, as George Lucas himself previously stated that the original idea for Luke was to take his father's place next to the emperor at the end of "Return of the Jedi." However, the filmmaker went back on his original idea and had Luke redeem his father and stand his ground as one of the last remaining Jedi.

While Luke's future after "Return of the Jedi" has been expanded in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, now called "Star Wars Legends," the stories are no longer considered canon by Disney and Lucasfilm.

From what is known so far is that Luke has stayed out of the public eye in the 30 years since the events of the second Death Star. His sister, Princess Leia and Han Solo have even needed to re-enforce the idea that the Force, the Jedi, and the Sith are all real.

This could indicate that Luke and the Jedi order have fallen to almost mythical status in the galaxy's history. This makes lots of sense considering that the Emperor and Darth Vader slaughtered all the Jedi to near extinction.

With no Jedi masters to seek out new Padawans and teach force sensitive children, the Jedi could have easily become forgotten.

Luke also had a hastened training period as well to say the least. Considering that he only knew Obi-Wan for what it seemed a few weeks or months. Also, it is not known how long Luke was training with Yoda on Dagobah.

What is the most like scenario is that Luke has gradually become a hermit similar to what Obi-Wan did in his later years. His control over the Force may not have cultivated as it might have since he lacked the training and a master to show him the finer points of the Force.

But at this point this is all speculation and fans and theorist will have to wait a few more days as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" debuts on Dec. 18, 2015.
