Hackers are launching hundreds of thousands of attacks on a daily basis against JD.com (JD), China's largest online direct sales company, according to the company's chief executive officer.

In an interview with Chinese state news media, Jd.com CEO Liu Qiangdong, also known as Richard Liu, revealed that the company's servers are subjected to hundreds of thousands of hack attempts every day.

In an effort to thwart hackers, who regularly employ distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, the company has increased the number of network security workers, hardware facilities, broadband width, and employees.

However, beefing up the JD.com's cyber security can be a costly venture, and it has reportedly cost the company millions of dollars. Fortunately for the company, it has deep pockets and can afford this expense. Other companies are not so lucky.

"Enterprises like JD are able to take the punch based on its scale, while for many new entrepreneurs, I believe this cost is devastating for them," Liu told People's Daily Online.

At the World Internet Conference being held this week in China, Chinese President Xi Jinping said governments around the world needed to work together to "oppose network surveillance and hacking."

Xi added that "cyberspace is similar to the real world in that both freedom and order are necessary."

JD.com isn't the only Chinese business that has to deal with regular cyber attacks. Earlier this month,  a new phishing attack was discovered targeting business and consumer users of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.com (BABA), which has approximately 400 million active users.

As part of the phishing attacks, fake emails were sent from what appeared to be an Alibaba.com email account with the address: feedback@service.alibaba.com. Also, last year Alibaba had to patch a major security vulnerability in one of its e-commerce portals that exposed the account details of tens of millions of merchants and consumers.
