During World War 2, Japanese Army forced nearly 200,000 women into sexual slavery. A majority of these women were from South Korea. There are 46 former comfort women who are still alive, and they are in their 80s and 90s.
"China has always advanced that Japan should face squarely and reflect upon its historical aggression, and deal with related issues in a responsible way," Lu Kang, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, said, according to Chinese state media.
Kang said that Japan committed serious crime against humanity by recruiting women from South Korea and other Asian countries as sex slaves.
In addition to agreeing to pay, Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe also offered his apology and remorse for the use of the South Korean women as "comfort women" by Japanese soldiers.
The issue of the "comfort women" has been as a major obstacle in the improvement of Japan and South Korea's relationship. Both the countries have said that the new agreement would resolve the issue "finally and irreversibly."
Kang commented on Japan and South Korea's relationship, saying that the improved relationship will be "conducive to the stability and development of the region and help promote relevant countries stick to a path of peaceful development."
