The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said on its website that the anti-porn initiative is meant to encourage app developers and companies to remove the porn materials themselves.

The statement added that Chinese authorities will "enhance abilities to discover pornographic and obscene apps" and improve the government's punishment process.

According to China Internet Network Information Centre, China has the world's largest online users with a total population of 632 million, and the majority - about 83 percent - are mobile users.

One of the most popular apps in China is Tencent's Wechat, which allegedly allows the exchange of pornographic materials. WeChat users claim that there are indeed chat groups that are dedicated to uploading and viewing of sex-related images.

Authorities say that the crackdown has led to the arrest of up to 130 suspects.

Authorities are seeking the public's help and cooperation to ensure a clean online environment. The Chinese government's campaign against the circulation of sexually explicit material online started in 2009, but the drive has since been intensified.
