Canada's Eugenie Bouchard defeated unseeded Nicole Gibbs of the United States 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinal stage of the Shenzhen Open in China on Wednesday.
The tournament's sixth seed Bouchard survived while the other seeded players failed to move to the next level of the competition. The Canadian player, who was once ranked as the world's No. 5 in October 20, 2014, dropped to 49 in the current rankings, according to the International Tennis Federation.

After over three months since her last match, the win was her second in a row in her comeback tournament since suffering concussion in a locker room fall that knocked her out of the final major of the US Open last summer.
"It was a solid match from me. I think I was able to improve off of my first round. But first and foremost I was able to play another whole match healthy, with no pain and no symptoms," Bouchard told the WTA Tour staff in Shenzhen.
Bouchard will next face the unseeded Hungarian Timea Babos, who currently ranks No. 70 in the world.
According to Yahoo Sports Canada, Babos, 22, was once the juniors No.2 in the ITF rankings. On the WTA Tour, she has posted better records in doubles than singles, being No. 8 in doubles back in June. She's a powerful hitter with good all-around skills, but lacks the consistency to take the next few steps.
In the other matches, tournament's third seed Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania was not able to finish the match and retired against the German Anna-Lena Friedsam, according to Canoe.
In other upsets, fourth-seeded and WTA No. 39 Monica Niculescu of Romania lost 6-1, 6-4 to Timea Babos of Hungary and seventh-seeded WTA No. 52 Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan lost 6-0, 6-4 to Czech player Katerina Siniakova, who is currently ranked as the 102nd in the world.
