A man in China took wedding proposals to the next level by giving his girlfriend a small castle instead of an engagement ring.

Li Shun doled out $23,000 (¥150,000) for the renovation of the 300-square-meter property at the Pingdingshan Park in Chongqing's Shapingba district. His friends also helped him brighten up the old warehouse-turned-castle. The whole project took him three months to finish.

Shun reportedly rented it for five years, paying ¥5,000 monthly.

He proposed to his girlfriend of one year, Zhou Yaxue, on January 1, 2016, and she happily said yes. But instead of a ring, Shun gave her the key to the house.

"My girlfriend said she wants to have a home at the park where some old Chongqing buildings are preserved when we first met.The warehouse with creepers on its walls looks like a ghost castle in fairy tales. My girlfriend, who has an artistic temperament, will like it," Shun said.

Yaxue, who is both a painter and writer, said that she never expected such a huge surprise. Shun displayed her paintings in different parts of the house. There is also a studio for Yaxue to paint and a receiving room for her friends. Daisies, the bride-to-be's favorite flowers, are also grown on top of the walls.

The couple met in January last year at the Pingdingshan Park, where their ghost castle is located.

Chinese man have staged some of the most expensive wedding proposals in the world, but not all of them have ended up in a "yes" from the girl.

A computer programmer in Guangzhou bought 99 iPhone 6 smartphones in 2014 when the phone was just released, arranged them in a heart-shaped space outside his girlfriend's office, and proposed. The iPhones reportedly cost $82,000 (¥535,000), but the girl said "no."

In a dating reality show, a man in Shenzhen brought 20 luxury cars outside his girl's workplace before he popped the question, but ultimately received a "no."
